BDSL Premier Postgame Week 10
2019 Premier Postgame Week 10
BSC International (4-2-3) 0 - Amherst Sharpshooters (5-2-2) 0
BDSLRumors game of the week featured two teams who started off hot but have sizzled as of late. Sharpshooters lost to both Lackawanna FCY and Queenston, while BSC Inter lost to Raiders and only managed a draw vs PUFC. With both teams needing points to lock in playoff berths, a lot was on the line. After 90 minutes neither team was able to find the net to finish nil nil. The one point was enough to earn a spot in the playoffs for Amherst Sharpshooters though.
We spoke with Amherst first:"We missed a few really good chances early in the game. We controlled most of the possession, but we didn’t generate enough good scoring chances. Inter defended well."Who was your best player?
"Rouse and Loncar played well for us."Who stood out for Inter?
"I thought Jenaro and their CBs played very well."This is the fourth game in a row you guys have struggled after coming out on fire. Still dealing with attendance and injury issues?
"We lost both of our starting CB’s (Martinez and Braun) to injury about 3 or 4 weeks ago. They should be healthy for playoffs. We’ve been forced to play CMs like Bartlo and Rouse at CB most games and they’ve done pretty well, but that also weakens our midfield."Are you at all worried about your play going into the post season?
"It’s just not quite clicking right now, but I think once we get a full lineup back for playoffs, we’ll be okay."Would you consider this a disappointing result or is a draw fair?
"It was probably a fair result based on the fact that we didn’t generate enough good chances, but still disappointing"Do you think Inter deserve to be in the playoff race?
"I do. They defend well and they’re good on the counter. They’ve gotten a lot of good results"BSC International thought they played well enough to earn a victory:
"Back and forth game, they had some chances right at the beginning, we had 3 clear cut breakaways, their keep made some nice stops. Penalty shouts both ways. Pretty clean game with classy opponents. They played a back 3, with a game plan to overload the flanks, so the game was mostly them possessing and us countering with 2 v2 or 3 v 3 up top. This game felt like we could have easily snatched the win with some luck."Who was your best player?
"Otto shut down Shawish all game, and I think he’s still chasing him, Rahim and Minehan also played well"Who stood out for the opposing team?
" probably Cody or one of their CMs with the beard, good distribution back there."You guys have been struggling as of late, with two draws in a row. What do you need to change to find your form from the start of the season?
"I would not characterize a draw against Amherst Sharpshooters as struggling. I think we played pretty well yesterday and we'll be ready to go next Sunday"We’re Sharpshooters one of the better teams you have faced this season? They seem to be struggling down the stretch.
"It may be true that they were stronger in years past, but this year's group is still probably the 2nd or 3rd best team in Premier"And where would you consider your team on that list of teams?
"I like the way our team has grown over the past two years. We may not get the recognition or pre-season rankings, but we're got a very tight group over here and I think on a perfect day we could test any team in Premier"
Our take:
Something is not right at camp Sharpshooters. Missing a couple CB's is definitely tough but most clubs have the depth to fill those spots. Amherst have been a shell of their former selves scoring a combined 4 goals over their last 5 games. Hopefully a match against Wolves FC is just what they need to find the net again. We think they finally get it together next week and score 4.Our rep from BSC Inter wouldn't characterize a draw against Amherst as struggling, but we do. As we previously mentioned Amherst have been a shell of themselves and this was a game that BSC could have put all the critics to rest. This game combined with a draw last week against PUFC has us wondering if we may have had them higher than they should have been. Their record against teams sitting in a playoff position right now is 0-2-3. That does not serve them well going into the playoffs.
Questions??
Do the Sharpshooters have the depth to make a long playoff run? What happens if they lose a CB again? Will that doom the rest of their season? Did they falter going with younger kids over BDSL veterans this offseason?Have BSC International peaked? This Cinderella story has beaten the lower teams but have struggled against the class of the Premier division. Will their stout defense be able to stand up and carry with the offense struggling?
Celtic United (3-5-0) - Pendleton United (0-6-3)
After shocking the world and eliminating the defending Tehel Cup and league champions BSC Raiders, Celtic United was in a must win situation to find themselves in the top 6 in the division. Pendleton United felt good after their draw against BSC International last week. A victory would do wonders for their chances to stay in the division in 2020. The result proved to us once again that Celtic United is the most bipolar team in the BDSL Premier division with a 3-2 loss to PUFC. Pendleton United is still alive in the relegation battle, earning a tough 3 points Sunday:
The mighty lions of Pendleton were roaring after the victory:"We finally get a result! Had our last starter back from injury and he played a huge different. Lads are starting to play well together, a bit too late, but hopefully we can pull it all together this Sunday."Who was your best player?
"Our best player was Mike Wright, 2G & 1A. Class performance, BDSL player of the week."Who stood out for your opponents?
"Alex Cancilla, the Marist midfielder was solid like always."You guys definitely shocked us with this result, not that your squad doesn’t have the talent, it’s just that they beat BSC Raiders 3 days prior to playing you guys. Where does CU compare to other teams you have faced this summer?
"Celtic was probably within the bottom 4 teams we have played, they just never seemed to have rhythm to play together."You guys have a huge game next week potentially for your Premier lives. Do you think you have what it takes in a game with the stakes so high?
"I think if we just won this game against a team coming off a huge win against raiders, we are up for it against Southtowns, doesn’t get bigger than this for us, premier lives are on the line"So predict the future, are you staying in Premier?
"Well, we need to hope the lads from Amherst get the job done. The great escape just could be very well on."You didn’t give us an answer. Will PUFC be playing in Premier next summer?
"Yes. Up the Lions."Celtic United blamed over confidence for the shocking result:
"We came out slow and unmotivated as if the game was going to be handed to us. However, Pendelton is better than they’re given credit for."Who was your best player?
"Our best player was Joel Rodwell. Only player to play simple, work hard, and win balls. Kyle wiatrowski was a close second."Who stood out for your opponents?
"Their striker Michael Wright was easily their best player. He had a piece to do with all 3 goals for them. Athletic and skillful player"In such an important game, how could your guys be as unmotivated? Now you guys beat to beat both BUSS and BSC Raiders by 5 goals each to make the playoffs.
"Yeah, as you can see we can beat anyone and lose to anyone. Unsure why we came out so flat, now putting ourself in an extremely difficult situation."How can you guys go from beating the top team in the league to losing PUFC in a matter of 4 days? Was it attendance?
"Wasn’t a matter of attendance. Yes - in both games actually we were missing key players, but we have a pretty deep roster. Comes down to mindset going into the game."You guys have BUSS both next Sunday and in Tehel Cup. Will we see the team that beat BSC or the team that lost to PUFC?
"Hopefully the one that beat BSC!"
Our take:
UP THE LIONS! We here at BDSL Premier Postgame are suckers for a good comeback story. After wanting to quit the division a few weeks ago PUFC have put in the work and are clawing for a chance. They needed this victory and they got it. As much as we want Southtowns to do well, their fate is sealed as you will read later. We want PUFC to beat Southtowns next week, along with a Wolves loss to Amherst, to keep them in Premier for 2020. And we think that it is going to happen as well.We are quite the opposite on Celtic United. Seriously, what the HELL is up with these guys? We wish they could still get relegated just because we don't want to have to cover them next summer. Just when we think they may have turned the corner they lose to a team that was winless with a -23 goal differential. We think they need a change in management. Can they make the playoffs this summer? Yes. Will they? Absolutely not. We think BUSS wipes the floor with them Sunday and puts them, and us, out of our misery. (We are a bit dramatic here, we see the potential and wish they would fulfill it, but don't).
Questions??
Can we see a comeback of epic proportions and see the basement dwellers of the entire season remain in Premier. What kind of showing will we get from them Sunday? If we were to post any questions we have for Celtic United we would have enough material to cover the entire 2019 season so we will just leave it at this ......WHAT?
Lackawanna FCY (6-1-1) 2 - Williamsville Willies (3-3-3) 1
Lackawanna is reeling after two consecutive losses, most recently bowing out of the Tehel Cup to Championship division side Beast City SC. A minimum of 19 points has put them in a great position for playoffs. Will two losses in a row hurt their confidence for the rest of the season? Willies are ready to find out. A loss to Lackawanna all but puts them out of the playoff race with one week remaining. Can they take advantage of Lackawanna's struggles and make the playoff race even tighter than it is? Willies were not able to earn the 3 points they needed and fall just short of the playoffs.
Lackawanna were happy with the result after the two consecutive losses:"It’s been a rough week for us , two huge games we lost one in a league play Vs. BSC Raiders abd one in The Tehel Cup quarterfinal Vs. Beast City .This game Vs. The Willies this past Sunday was an important game to bounce back to gain the momentum to finish the regular season in a positive way to cary us into the post season with confidence. The game wasn’t easy both teams were going for it early. The Willies plaid hard . Clean game nothing but respect to them ."Who was your best player?
"Again it’s a team effort everyone played great, Zakaria 2 goals gives him player of the game ."Who stood out for Willies?
"The Willies Goalie Noah Smith was unbelievable crazy saves left and right he was everywhere."What has been the issue for your recent struggles?
"Honestly players availability due to injuries, work, and traveling."At a full squad do you think you guys are the top team in the division?
"The BSC Raiders is the only team in our division can claim to be the top team year in and year out because of their consistency. We will get theirs soon if we win the challenge of holding on to the core of our team roster this year and only make minor adjustments on yearly basis. We are almost there."Williamsville Willies keeper Noah Smith was generous enough to answer some questions for us:
"Glad I could get a take on this before the season ended, but coming into the game, we knew we had to take points from both of our last 2 games and coming into a struggling Yemen side was looking up for us. As the early minutes went on, we could clearly see that the only way they were going to penetrate our defense was by using long balls over the top to Ali and Zak. We were holding them to little chances but one slipped through and Zak followed up his own rebound to put the first goal in off a breakaway. Shortly after, some miscommunication in the back led to Zak finding his second of the night. After half time we knew we had to do something and up stepped little guy Graham to bury one away for the good guys. Moments after a potential hand ball clearance off the line fell to one of our players who then struck the crossbar, the ball would just not bounce for us. We were pushing and giving all we had but at the end of the day it was not enough to get the second goal. An interesting and tense atmosphere at the cage saw the willies fall 2-1 in the end."Who was your best player?
"We had a mixture of players who played extraordinarily well at the cage, Pretty Ricky ran faster than I’ve ever seen him run, getting to through balls and putting pressure on the defense to cause dangerous turnovers in the back. Graham got on the scoresheet and played amazing in the back, stopping counters and blocking shots like the World Cup was on the line."Who stood out for Lackawanna?
"Their stand out player came no shock to anyone, Zak played very well and had the opportunity to score more than two on the evening, dangerous on and off the ball. Honorable mention to AQ, who was deadly in the midfield, sending players on runs directly on net, great vision from the lad and was good to see him playing so well."Would you consider this season to be more of a positive or a negative from your view?
"I think it’s a little bittersweet to be honest. I think coming into the year, we knew that we had to really fight to stay out of relegation like last season, our first goal was to stay in the top division to show that even though our willies are small, our hearts are big. So after seeing that staying up was on course, I believe we feel as though we are good enough to have made it into the playoffs. There are many results in our season that should have been different, too many ties, bad losses that should not have been losses. So I believe that on paper, it’s positive, but only to an extent. Where as we feel we should have earned more, which is disappointing. But we still have one more game to show the BDSL that these willies are here to stay up."
Our take:
Not really a shocking result to us. It was about what we had expected. Lackawanna needed to bounce back and earn 3 points. We still think they are in the 2-4 range of teams all competing with Amherst and BUSS. Despite their minuscule manhood, Willies have done really well this season. We think they still have a way to go to contend with the league leaders all season though. We think with another year under their belt and a few more attacking options they could contend.Questions??
Will Lackawanna continue to have attendance issues in the playoffs? With them going out of the Tehel Cup, can they be motivated to contend only for the playoffs? Can Willies play the role of spoiler against BSC International this week, potentially giving Queenston a chance to sneak in the playoffs or even minimally making BSC Inter the 6th seed?
Southtowns FPFC (1-8-0) 0- Buffalo United SS (3-3-3) 10
Southtowns need to draw or beat BUSS and beat Pendleton United to have a chance to stay in the division in 2020. Anything short of that means they will play their soccer in the BDSL Championship division next year. BUSS is riding high on momentum after a couple strong showings, winning 3 of their last 4 regular season games. They also put Championship division side Los Chupacabras out of the Tehel Cup tournament on Thursday. They find themselves in the final four of the tournament for the third year in a row, both previous years they made it to the finals. A victory for BUSS makes them a near lock for the post season. Southtowns decided not to show up for this game, and they are the first team relegated from Premier this season.
Southtowns didn't have much to say after the disappointing result and season:"tuff with 8 guys , number 50 stood out and our keeper played well and stopped a lot of shots. all 9 came out and battled hard"BUSS had a lot more to say about their embarrassing victory:
"It wasn’t really much of a game to be honest. I give those guys a lot of respect for finishing out the match despite being down to 9 then 8 guys for most of the game. It really wasn’t fair though. As you would probably expect we really had the ball most of the game and had lots of chances. But we were kind of just screwing around instead of really giving it our all once we put the first couple away. We were really trying to focus on keeping possession and trying to work on our creativity. Polo didn’t suit up and guys like myself, Ian, and Mike, who don’t really inject ourselves into the lineup, played a ton. Medaille soccer complex was really strange. The field itself was fantastic. The turf was soft and it seemed perfect length and width wise. But it’s located in the middle of what seems to be an industrial compound. It looks like a work in progress though."Who was your best player?
"Our best player was Ian Martin based on two plays and one act. First he dribbled two defenders and shot the ball for the first time I’ve ever seen in knowing him for 30 years. It happened to hit the post though. Secondly he absolutely baffled the defense and likely Hunter Walsh with a brilliant heel pass that both teams admired. It put Walsh one on one with the keeper. We won’t discuss how that series of play ended though. Again, in 30 years of playing with Ian I’ve never seen him connect on a heel ball, although he tries all the time. And then for his act of buying the first round at the bar after the game as well. Shoutout to Rich Williams for the wings too."Who stood out for SFPFC?
"Their best player was Phil Pinzone. In a game where your team only has 9/8 guys it’s hard to stand out but he played his ass off and worked for every 50/50 ball till the final whistle. Props to Will Smith for working hard as well. Southtowns probably deserved a goal for their efforts, but we were determined to get Bryce a clean sheet."
"I'd like to add that the officiating was great as well."Some would say it’s a bit disrespectful to score 10 against a team playing with 8 guys. What are your thoughts on that?
"They are probably right, it was a bit disrespectful. We scored 5 on Clarence earlier in the year and ended up tying. That was a huge eye opener for us. We are determined to not let anything like that happen again to us. So if it means we have to win 10-0 so be it. Last year we were beating Celtic United 4-0 and they quit. Southtowns could have quit. But as I said before I respect those guys for continuing to fight despite the score."You guys are playing well going into the post season, do you think it will continue if you make playoffs and in the Tehel Cup semi/finals?
"This is the best group of players we have had on this team since I’ve been around. We are stacked from top to bottom. But this year we are playing together. I think the momentum we have built so far will carry us to a league title and a Tehel Cup championship."
Our take:
Yikes! This was an important game for SFPFC and they showed up with 9 guys? That does not say a lot about their core group of players? They could have kept themselves in the division, possibly, with a strong showing. Instead they are the first team to be relegated in Premier. We had hopes that this club could work their way out of the basement, but their fate is now sealed.BUSS did the right thing in our eyes. As our rep from BUSS mentioned they were determined not to slip up again and cost themselves a playoff opportunity. If a team only shows up with 9 guys in a league where goal differential is important, go for it. They have an important match this week against Celtic United on Sunday and then a Tehel Cup game against the same team on Thursday. We see them earning victories in both and earning a spot in the playoffs and the Tehel Cup final for the third year in a row.
Questions??
Can Southtowns rebuild their squad this off season and compete at the top of the Championship division next summer. Does this club need a change in management or leadership? Can BUSS continue their hot streak? They have 32 goals in the last 6 weeks after only 1 goal in the first 4. Can they continue to score the same once they get to the playoffs against higher caliber teams?
Queenston FC (3-4-1) 1 - Clarence (5-2-2) 3
After a shocking upset last week, defeating Amherst, Queenston looked to maintain their hot streak against Clarence. Clarence came in to the game on a 3 game winning streak in league play. Clarence could earn a playoff spot with a win, while Queenston would need to win out and a lot of help to make the top 6. Ultimately, Clarence proved their might on the back of transfer window signing Alex Reid and his hat trick.
We spoke with Clarence first:"1st thing was the grass field! Perfect conditions for soccer. 2nd: We started very slowly and let them get in behind our back 4 early on. We readjusted and I thought we took the game to them. We could have had a couple more in the back of the net but just happy to clinch a playoff spot with the W. Queenston are an awesome group. They even went toe to toe on beers after."Who was your best player?
"Alex Reid...period"Who stood out for Queenston?
" Troy Brady - We knew we had to be aware of him going into the game, but we had an early lapse and he did very well to make a nice run in behind our backs to create the first goal. John Netter also stood on his head and came up with few a few big saves."Do you think that the Queenston squad you faced Sunday is indicative of their position in the table? Or do you think they are better than their record indicates?
"Queenston always plays us really tough. I think they should be closer or even in a playoff spot with there roster. I think they’ve had a down year like we did last year."Also, next Sunday's game vs Lackawanna could potentially be for home field advantage through the playoffs, and a bye in the first round. Do you think you guys will continue to stay motivated even though you have already earned a playoff spot?
"We want 2nd place. We are super motivated to play Sunday. I’ll be checking out Lackawanna vs Queenston tomorrow with Sunday being that important for us."Queenston were disappointed with the result but happy to get Troy Brady back on the field:
"Sunday’s game against Clarence was an interesting one...we welcomed back Troy Brady who is an absolute game changer for us, and he was able to score 3 minutes into the contest from a nice feed from Jared Burns. Those two were probably our best players/playmakers in the game. So we felt good initially. Clarence had a half chance or two within the first 20 minutes or so but we continued to look dangerous early on. Then, out of no where, it just stopped. No more shots on goal for the rest of the game, aside from maybe a free kick. Way too much dribbling and holding on to the ball far too long. Not coincidentally, two giveaways led directly to Clarence goals. First one was aided by a deflection from one of our defenders, but not an own goal given its power. Second was driven low. We got to half disappointed to be down 2-1. Second half was sloppy. Clarence had many chances to break the game open but Netter made some phenomenal saves, and any of our chances were ran down by Kenny May on the opposing side. Between he and Reid, they out paced us noticeably. Their third goal, which was also Reid’s third, was a phenomenal individual curling effort."
"Playing on grass for the first time actually hurt us I think. Not sure if it would have changed the outcome, but connecting passes or having the confidence to pass to a half-open player wasn’t there on Sunday"
"I’d put Clarence behind BUSS, and maybe ever so slightly ahead of Amherst in the premier pecking order of who we played this year."
"Oddly enough even with this loss we are still alive for the playoffs, but it involves a Willies win and two wins of our own to close out the regular season. And I think we also must close the GD gap of 4 with BSC Inter. Bleak, but technically still achievable"
"The good news here is that even if we do not succeed in making the playoffs here down the stretch, you can’t ask for a better tune up for the Tehel Cup semis (vs Beast City) in that we play quality sides in Lackawanna and Raiders here over the next 5 days"
Who stood out for Clarence?
"their standouts were Reid, May and Hughes, the last of which was everywhere. He aided the attack and stopped some promising build up at times"Do you think Clarence has a shot to go all the way based on what you saw Sunday?
"No, but given the right draw, I wouldn’t be shocked if they reach a final. They lost to Raiders 6-0 earlier this year, and it came down to their back line not being able to withstand Raiders’ threats. That’s not a knock on Clarence. But that’s how you can expose them. We couldn’t do it Sunday; their backline played excellent and it’ll take them as far as they want to go in the playoffs"Do you think we will see a motivated Queenston team against Beast in Tehel Cup if you guys don’t get favorable results against Lackawanna and Raiders and miss the playoffs?
"You’ll get a motivated Queenston team in the Tehel Cup no matter what. We love the cup, and would love to add a trophy to the trophy case. We won it in 2014 at Nichols. This year its being held at Nichols. It’s meant to be!"
Our take:
Based on what other teams have said this Summer, Clarence doesn't have what it takes to win it all. With that being said they have been consistently consistent and getting points in games they should. It has been that way all year. They haven't had any real shocking results besides two games against the BSC's. We do also feel that they aren't as good as their record says they are though. If they draw BSC Inter we think they have a chance, any other team and we don't like their chances.Queenston will finish about where I'm sure they expected to finish. The lack of a proven superstar goal scorer really hurts them. Going young seems to be a good idea but some of their guys will take a bit of time to develop. Outside of Troy Brady, nobody else on the roster currently scares the rest of Premier.
Questions??
Will Clarence continue to prove their naysayers wrong and win? Can Alex Reid be the player to put them over the edge with his goal scoring ability? Especially in a close game? Can Queenston continue to develop their core guys around the talent such as Netter, Suitor, and Brady?
Wolves FC (2-6-1) 1 - BSC Raiders (7-0-1) 3
With Wolves in a battle for their Premier lives they need to finish the season strong. Unfortunately they had to beat the 2018 Treble winners BSC Raiders to do so. BSC Raiders come into this game having suffered their first defeat of the season in Tehel Cup action Thursday against Celtic United. Sunday's result did nothing positive for Wolves as Pendleton United closed the gap and Wolves weren't able to earn a point.
Wolves FC manager/keeper Andrew Renkas was happy with his teams effort, even in defeat:"Solid game. Both showed with 12/13. They controlled most of the first half. They got their goals an a nice passing play in our box that went to Jonny Grabs I believe and put a shot at me that I absolutely should have had. Went underneath my arm/body when I went down. So I screwed my team on that one. We were defending pretty well until that point and I think that really took a little bit out of us. Every time we play them they always seem to have a run from deep in midfield that doesn’t get picked up and they get put in one v one. So O’Keefe finished that one. Went near post and thought, once again, maybe I should have done better. Went into half 2-0 down. We knew that we could hit em on the counter and that’s what we intended to do. Thought we had some really good stretches of play together that either ended up in good chances or that final ball was defended well. They had a last defender foul On Galanti, which we all thought was pretty clear, but was only given a yellow. Farrell had a really good free kick very well saved. We had the ball in dangerous areas but they defended it well. They had a chance on a counter that Pikuzinski had a 30 yard break at and he finished it right after that and that pretty much describes our season overall. Really good play then that happens. But we kept at it and got one through Galanti. They had chances on their remaining counters but we were able to cut them out and try to spring our own. They locked it down from there on out. Overall, very proud of the boys and their effort tonight. With the result from Celtic/Pendleton, we knew we had to go out and go for it. And we plan to do the same thing next week."Who was your best player?
"Big shout out to Joe Farrell again. We’ve bounced him around from right wing to center mid through out the season and he’s done fantastically, in both. But last night he really stood out in the center. Him and Klecks have fantastic chemistry. Thought that Sal and Terp both played well at center back for us too."Who stood out for your opponents?
"I’d probably say Colin O’Keefe. His work rate is insane. But collectively, they are raiders and they are all talented."You guys are still in a tough situation. You have a big game next week. Will your guys get the job done? Predict the future for us. Will Wolves FC be playing in Premier next season?
"We absolutely are. Didn’t foresee that one coming. Were gonna come out balls to the wall next week. Should never have came down to this, but here we are and we have to dig ourselves out of this at the death of the season. We’re ready."Were Raiders the best team you have faced this summer?
"Hard to tell. They weren’t at full strength. So I really don’t think it would be fair to judge that. They looked less dangerous in certain aspects in comparison to years past, but they are the class of the league for a reason"
Our take:
Wolves are still in big trouble. We don't see them getting the job done this week against Amherst and see Pendleton United getting the victory over SFPFC. If these scenarios come true Wolves FC will be playing thier football in Championship division next summer. They just haven't put the showing in that they have needed and now they are clinging for life. This could be more trouble for Wolves than they know. They picked up a bunch of guys this past off season. If they drop to Championship, will all those players go to other Premier teams? They could have a major debacle on their hands.BSC Raiders were able to bounce back after a shocking loss to Celtic United in Tehel Cup action Thursday to earn 3 more points towards their undefeated 2019 campain. We have no choice but to still consider them for the #1 spot in the division.
Questions??
Will Wolves show the heart and desire they need and somehow steal a point against Amherst this Sunday?Have Celtic United shown that the mighty Raiders are in fact human? Or should we chalk this one up to a case of "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut"?
